Community Left ‘Shocked and Saddened’ After Fire Devastates Frome Flats

Frome Town Council has expressed deep shock and sadness after a significant fire erupted at a block of flats on Edmund Park Estate, Marigold Road, on the evening of Wednesday, December 3. The blaze began around 7:50 pm in a second-story flat and quickly spread to neighboring units.

Selwood Housing, the managing body of the building, confirmed that three flats were affected. Prompt evacuation ensured all residents were safely out of harm’s way, and firefighters from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, supported by Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, brought the fire under control by the early hours of Thursday, December 4.

Temporary accommodations, including hotels, have been provided for displaced residents. Frome Town Council is actively collaborating with partner agencies to deliver ongoing support for those impacted by the fire.

Mayor Anita Collier conveyed her sympathies to the residents, stating, “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the fire at Edmund Park. Our thoughts are with the affected residents, and we thank the emergency services for their swift and brave response. We are working with our partners to provide practical support to the community and will communicate updates shortly.”

Emergency services reported visible flames and smoke from a top-floor window, and one individual required treatment for smoke inhalation. The fire caused extensive damage, leading to concerns about the building’s structural integrity. Representatives from housing associations and utility companies were on scene to assist with rehoming efforts and to safely isolate gas and electrical supplies.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with police officers and firefighters expected to revisit the site to gather further information.
