Communities Unite to Aid Rough Sleepers in Bath

As winter approaches, various organizations are teaming up to assist the homeless population in Bath. The Bath & North East Somerset Council, alongside Homeless Partnership agencies, commits to providing accommodations for individuals sleeping rough, particularly in severe weather conditions.

To extend support during the day, local cafes have pledged to offer warm spaces and hot beverages to rough sleepers. Additionally, the Genesis Lifeline Centre provides daytime facilities, including services on Saturday mornings. Julian House’s Manvers Street Hostel now offers takeaway meals for street rough sleepers during specific hours throughout the day.

For those looking to contribute or volunteer, reaching out to Julian House or DHI is encouraged. In addition, the Nationwide Building Society on Stall Street features a ‘Tap and Donate’ point for contactless donations. A notable initiative is the BillyChip platform, allowing the public to donate directly to rough sleepers, offering a safe and transparent way to support them.

However, it’s important not to provide items that prolong street living, such as tents and bedding. Council member Councillor Matt McCabe underlines the ongoing efforts to prevent homelessness and emphasizes the availability of overnight accommodations and warm shelters for those in need.

As temperatures drop, Julian House’s chief executive Helen Bedser stresses the intensified impact on street life. Reiterating the year-round nature of homelessness, she highlights the emergency shelter’s provision of food and lodging, as well as housing options to support individuals' transition towards independence.

Concerned citizens can report sightings of rough sleepers through the StreetLink website or by calling 0300 500 0914 for local support. If the individual is under 18, contacting the authorities is advised.
