College partners with law firm to launch Legal Skills Programme for aspiring lawyers

Students at Richard Huish College will move beyond textbooks to gain practical, career-ready skills, thanks to a new partnership with prominent law firm Stephens Scown LLP. Together, they have launched a Legal Skills Programme aimed at preparing the next generation of legal professionals for the demands of the industry.

The programme, delivered over six sessions throughout the academic year, is designed to develop key professional competencies that legal employers increasingly value. Upon completion, students will earn a certificate signaling their enhanced readiness for legal careers.

Focusing on vital areas such as client care, professional communication, and networking, the course content has been crafted in close collaboration with practicing legal experts to ensure relevance to real-world legal work.

Course Manager Rowena Mudge expressed enthusiasm about the initiative: “Our students have a fantastic opportunity to learn alongside a highly respected local law firm. Stephens Scown’s generous contribution of time, expertise, and a £500 enrichment fund investment equips students with invaluable experience and a certificate that will distinguish their applications.”

Stephens Scown, an employee-owned and B Corp Certified firm recognized for its commitment to client service and professional development, will have its Somerset team deliver the sessions and provide ongoing support to the students.

Stephen Wray, head of the Somerset office, highlighted the firm’s community focus: “Supporting our community meaningfully is a core value at Stephens Scown, where we balance people, planet, and profit. We are thrilled to back Richard Huish College’s Legal Skills Programme, sharing our expertise and inspiring future legal talent.”

Alistair Tudor, Head of Transformation and Client Delivery, added: “In today’s evolving legal marketplace, future advisors need more than academic law knowledge. This programme fosters an understanding of how lawyers operate and hones softer skills such as networking, people management, conflict resolution, and delivering excellent client service.

“We are excited to demonstrate how placing the client’s experience at the centre of everything we do helps differentiate us in a competitive market and supports students in standing out professionally.”
