The Sportsman, a well-known pub in Bridgwater, located at 73 Bath Road, is poised to be transformed into a convenience store, pending approval of new planning proposals. After closing its doors in late November 2025, landlords John and Debbie Dee announced via social media that the pub had been sold by its owner, despite its reputation as a popular and thriving local establishment.
Developer Jig Patel has submitted plans to convert the property situated at the corner of Bath Road and Union Street into a convenience retail outlet. Somerset Council is expected to reach a decision on this proposal by early autumn.
The conversion plans include no alterations to the property’s first-floor accommodation. To enhance security, a new entrance door and roller shutter will be installed. The store will offer 204 square meters of retail space while maintaining the existing two car parking spaces and adding six cycle parking spaces.

This new convenience store is projected to create up to three full-time and four part-time jobs, operating daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. A spokesperson for Clive Miller Planning, representing Mr. Patel, emphasized that the former pub had been closed for about six months and was marketed nationally and locally for over 18 months without success.
The spokesperson highlighted that the change of use maintains a local service, replacing the pub with a convenience store. Alternative pubs, such as the Cross Rifles and the New Market Hotel, remain in the vicinity, whereas convenient shopping options in the area are limited. The closest convenience store, Bath Street News, reportedly has restricted hours.
Bridgwater Town Council has expressed support for the change of use, while recommending that the property’s characteristic bay windows be preserved whenever possible. The final decision on the application is anticipated within six months and may be determined either by Somerset Council’s Planning Committee North or through delegated officer powers.
