The former Sportsman public house at 73 Bath Road, Bridgwater, could soon be transformed into a convenience store, pending approval of new planning proposals. The pub closed in late November 2025 after landlords John and Debbie Dee announced its sale, describing it as an “excellent and popular” establishment.
Now, Jig Patel has submitted plans to convert the property at the corner of Bath Road and Union Street into a retail convenience store. Somerset Council is expected to reach a decision on the application by early autumn.
The proposed conversion will preserve the first-floor accommodation while installing a new entrance door and a roller shutter for security. The store will provide approximately 204 square meters of retail space and retain the existing two car parking spaces, with an additional six cycle spaces included.

Employment opportunities are expected to rise with the new store, creating around three full-time and four part-time positions. The shop is planned to operate daily from 6am to 11pm.
Clive Miller Planning, representing Mr Patel, highlighted that the pub was marketed for over 18 months before closing and emphasized that swapping one local service for another benefits the community. Alternative pubs like the Cross Rifles and New Market Hotel remain nearby, while convenience stores in the area are limited, with Bath Street News having restricted hours.
Bridgwater Town Council has expressed support for the change of use but urged for retention of the property’s distinctive bay windows if possible. Somerset Council’s final decision is expected within six months, though it remains undecided whether it will be made by the planning committee or through delegated officer powers.
