Climate Protesters Charged After Barricading Themselves Inside Bath Abbey

Four climate protesters are facing charges of aggravated trespass and obstructing lawful activity after allegedly barricading themselves inside Bath Abbey. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 13, 2025, disrupting a tour group of 16 people in the historic city centre location.

At Bath Magistrates Court on Wednesday, January 7, Emma Ireland, 41, of Bristol; Katherine Chesterman, 60, of Lympne; Stephen Pritchard, 66, of Radstock; and Reverend William White, 71, of Bollington, all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During proceedings, Stephen Pritchard – one of the defendants – remarked, “I wish to be judged on the morality of my actions.” When asked to enter a plea on his behalf, the court clarified that he must respond personally, after which he formally pled not guilty.
