Clarks Village Blossoms with 600 New Plants and Plans for a Bug Hotel

Clarks Village is undergoing an exciting transformation as it plants over 600 native shrubs and flowers to enhance local biodiversity. This ambitious sustainability project, launched to coincide with World Environment Day, focuses on creating thriving habitats and food sources for wildlife and pollinators.

The planting efforts are concentrated around the Westway entrance along the A39, where a flourishing hedge now stands. This hedge is a diverse mix of native species including hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, hazel, guelder rose, spindle, and dogwood, offering blossoms, berries, nuts, and foliage that support various wildlife throughout the seasons.

Additionally, a new hedgerow featuring the evergreen Cotoneaster Franchetii has been planted near one of the main car parks. This particular shrub not only produces attractive flowers and berries to attract birds and bees but also excels at absorbing pollution, contributing to cleaner air in the area.

In a previously underutilized grassy patch adjacent to the adventure playground, a wildflower meadow has been established using turf containing 32 UK-native flower species and two grasses. This pollinator-friendly haven offers vital habitat for insects and other pollinators, enhancing the local ecosystem.

Further plans include the introduction of a large bug hotel to provide winter hibernation shelters for insects, alongside additional native hedges and spring bulbs to sustain the area’s natural beauty and biodiversity.

Clarks Village’s initiative is part of its broader commitment to environmental responsibility. The outlet already sources 100% of its electricity from renewable energy and recycles nearly 75% of its waste, sending zero waste to landfill.

Chris Davis, Centre Director at Clarks Village, highlighted the importance of these efforts: “Our stunning outdoor environment offers a unique opportunity to make meaningful changes that benefit local wildlife and the environment. Sustainability is not just a trend for us; it’s an essential responsibility to ensure a greener future for our community.”
