City Centre Road Closures Set to Disrupt Wells as Gas Upgrade Moves Forward

Wells is preparing for significant disruptions as Wales & West Utilities begins the final phase of a critical gas pipeline upgrade, starting Monday, July 7. This last stage will last approximately five weeks, concluding by Friday, August 8, barring any unforeseen delays.

Since March, the utility company has been working closely with Somerset Council to carefully schedule these works, ensuring they do not coincide with major local events. The upcoming focus will be on Southover, where replacement of gas pipes will require closing the road between South Street and Silver Street junctions for the duration of the project. Becket Place will also experience closures during this time.

Simon Lee, project manager for Wales & West Utilities, emphasized the necessity of the work: “Though the closures may cause inconvenience, this upgrade is essential to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply for homes and businesses throughout Wells. Our team will be on-site daily to complete the work safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.”

The upgrade ensures that Wells’s gas network remains dependable, supporting heating, cooking, and daily routines for local residents. Despite being largely underground and out of sight, this network plays an integral role in the community’s wellbeing.
