Circus Fan’s Lifetime Archive Wows Bidders at Auction

Ken Rattenbury, a Bridport resident and lifelong circus enthusiast, saw his extraordinary archive of vintage circus memorabilia captivate collectors at an auction this June. The extensive collection, sold by Lawrences Auctioneers in Crewkerne, attracted nationwide attention and spirited competition among bidders.

Rattenbury, a respected figure in the circus community, amassed a remarkable assortment spanning from the Victorian era to contemporary times. His archive included rare posters, programmes, and ephemera, many connected to performances in towns like Bridport, Lyme Regis, and Weymouth.

According to auctioneer Simon Jones, “This was more than a collection—it was a heartfelt passion. Ken’s dedication to preserving circus history shines through the exceptional rarity and scope of these items, which are now treasured by collectors anew.”

A standout lot featured a striking large-format Circus Agogo poster, measuring an impressive 101cm by 76cm, alongside rare posters from Rosaire’s Circus and W. Pinder & Sons. Originally estimated at £200, this lot ignited fierce bidding and ultimately sold for an impressive £4,000, including the buyer’s premium.

The entire archive was part of Lawrences’ Fine Art Sale, drawing attention from circus devotees and collectors across the UK, who appreciated the chance to own a piece of circus heritage.
