Excitement and curiosity among fans surrounding Cillian Murphy’s participation in the 28 Years Later series have finally been put to rest. Following the recently released trailer for 28 Years Later, which hits cinemas on June 20, many viewers speculated about Murphy’s mysterious presence—or absence—in the new installment.
Fans were intrigued when a gaunt figure resembling Murphy’s iconic character Jim appeared briefly in the trailer, sparking debates and emotional reactions online. Some feared the character might have succumbed to the devastating virus, expressing disappointment on social media platforms like Reddit where discussions ran rampant about his fate and potential return.
However, director Danny Boyle has now confirmed that Murphy’s involvement is indeed reserved for the sequel titled The Bone Temple, slated for release in 2026. Speaking to IGN, Boyle cautiously revealed, “He is in the second one,” while adding, “I shouldn’t give away too much. I’ll get killed.”

Boyle explained that while 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple were filmed consecutively, financing for the trilogy’s final chapter is still pending. He emphasized, “It will depend on how the first one does,” hoping that positive reception will secure the green light for the third film. The entire creative team, including Murphy, is reportedly ready to continue.
Producer Andrew Macdonald also provided clarity, confirming Murphy’s absence from 28 Years Later but reinforcing his involvement as an executive producer. Macdonald expressed optimism about Murphy’s future participation in the trilogy, stating, “We wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved… I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future.”
Fans can look forward to experiencing 28 Years Later in theaters on June 20, while the full scope of Murphy’s return to the franchise will unfold with the upcoming second installment and potentially beyond.
