Churchill Academy Earns ‘Good’ Rating in Ofsted Report, Recognized for Leadership and Academic Excellence

Churchill Academy & Sixth Form in North Somerset has been rated as “Good” in all categories after its latest Ofsted inspection. Inspectors commended the school’s leadership, curriculum, and dedicated student support, highlighting significant progress since the previous inspection in March 2023.

The report applauds the academy’s broad and ambitious curriculum, designed to prepare students effectively for future learning. Inspectors noted strong academic foundations, active student leadership, and a wide array of extracurricular activities that enrich the student experience.

Significant improvements in student behaviour were emphasized, with inspectors observing calm and respectful social environments that contribute to a safe school atmosphere. Both staff and parents expressed their agreement on the positive changes.

Headteacher Chris Hildrew expressed pride in the team’s efforts: “We are thrilled that Ofsted recognized the impact of our hard work and the improvements achieved. The multitude of opportunities and the role of student leadership at Churchill are core to our ethos, and seeing this acknowledged is truly rewarding.”

The report also highlighted effective teaching approaches, where expert subject knowledge and engaging lessons foster deep understanding of subjects. The school’s reading strategy was praised for encouraging regular reading and vocabulary development, enhancing fluency and confidence.

In the sixth form, inspectors identified a comprehensive focus on preparing students for life beyond school, with many progressing to selective universities. The academic rigour and alignment of coursework with student aspirations were particularly noted.

Gary Lewis, CEO of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership, commended the academy’s achievements: “This inspection shines a light on Churchill’s many strengths and the tremendous dedication of its staff. The commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience is clear, and we look forward to sustained progress.”

Serving pupils aged 11 to 18, Churchill Academy is dedicated to inclusivity, offering additional resources for students with special educational needs and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. While the impact of these support measures is still developing, inspectors acknowledged the school’s ongoing commitment.

Furthermore, the school’s efforts extend beyond academics, with a curriculum adapted to help students explore and discuss complex social issues, preparing them as thoughtful and informed citizens.
