On Sunday, August 31, Avon and Somerset Police responded to an incident at the Baptist Church in Bridgwater at 7:20 pm, where rocks were thrown at the building while approximately 400 men, women, and children were inside. Many of those inside are non-English speakers, highlighting the church’s role as a welcoming place for vulnerable members of the community.
The attack resulted in several damaged windows. In addition to the assault on the church, it is believed that the perpetrators also broke into an abandoned pub adjacent to the church.
Acting PS Joshua Maguire emphasized the seriousness of the event, stating, “Identifying those responsible remains a matter of utmost importance. This is a place of worship that welcomes vulnerable members of our community.”

Police have assured the community that they will maintain a strong presence in the area and continue working closely with local communities and partnership teams to prevent further incidents.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the event or who has CCTV, doorbell, or dashcam footage related to the attack to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 5225246099, or to submit information through the police online appeals form.
