Chip-stealing Seagull Mural Breathes New Life into Taunton’s Independent Quarter

A cheeky mural featuring a seagull snatching chips has become the talk of Taunton’s town centre, injecting character and charm into the independent shopping quarter. This vibrant artwork, the final installment in a community-led project, brings a playful spirit to St James Street, an area known for its unique, local traders.

The mural was created by local artist Sam Gaden of Aerosol Art as part of a £6,500 initiative funded by residents and independent businesses. Sam chose the theme with purpose: a chip-stealing seagull perfectly captures the cheeky antics often seen near fish and chip shops, adding a humorous nod to the area’s seafaring bird troubles.

Strategically painted at eye level, the lower seagull invites passers-by to snap selfies, turning the mural into an interactive landmark. Susie Thomas, a local business owner who spearheaded the mural campaign, explains, “The seagull on the chip shop wall is a fun reflection of local life—and yes, these birds do have a bit of a notorious reputation around here. The mural makes people laugh and stops them in their tracks.”

The artwork has generated a buzz both online and within the community, drawing thousands of positive social media comments. Susie notes, “It’s hard to define viral, but this mural has certainly reached far beyond our expectations with such overwhelming support.”

Funding for this creative project came from a mix of public donations and generous local businesses including Albert Goodman, World of Bears, the Belle Boudoir, and Nicky’s Flower Studio, coordinated through a GoFundMe campaign.

Sam Gaden, an experienced muralist with three decades of work under his belt, felt instantly connected to the project. “I saw this as a fantastic opportunity to transform a blank wall into something engaging for the whole community,” he said. Initially planned to cover only the gable end of the building, Sam extended the mural along the wall and even onto the shop’s front facade to create a more cohesive piece.

Though he keeps a low profile online, Sam has been warmly embraced by locals eager to express their appreciation. “The positive in-person reactions make every brushstroke worthwhile,” he says. “Art like this reminds us why spaces like this need vibrant, community-driven art.”

Looking ahead, Susie hints that the project is just beginning. “More local businesses are opening and planning their own murals—like a cheese shop adding a little mouse character. It’s incredible to see how art is revitalizing the area, improving shop fronts, and drawing people in.”

Meanwhile, Sam continues his mural work across the region, driven by a love for Taunton. “I paint murals weekly for local businesses, often funding them myself. My goal is simple—to help clean up and brighten Taunton, one wall at a time.”
