A devastating bus crash near Minehead, Somerset, has claimed the life of one child and left several others injured. The incident occurred this afternoon, Thursday, July 17, on the A396 between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe.
At around 3 pm, emergency services responded to reports of a bus carrying between 60 and 70 passengers—comprising adults and children—overturning on Cutcombe Hill. The vehicle was transporting pupils from Minehead Middle School on a day trip.
Avon and Somerset Police declared the situation a major incident. By 9 pm, they confirmed that one child tragically died and two other children were airlifted to hospital due to serious injuries. In total, 21 individuals were taken to hospitals for treatment, while many others sustained minor injuries or remained unharmed but were relocated to a rest center.

The police released a statement expressing condolences to the deceased child’s family and emphasized ongoing support for all those affected. Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, and authorities are urging witnesses to contact them via 101. They also requested the public to refrain from speculation to preserve the dignity of victims and their families.
Beacon Education Multi-Academy Trust, the school’s governing body, affirmed their close coordination with emergency services and their commitment to supporting pupils, families, and staff during this difficult time.
Peter Prior-Sankey, director of Ridlers—the local coach operator responsible for the vehicle—expressed deep concern for the welfare of passengers and the driver. The company is cooperating fully with authorities to understand the incident.
Local residents described the scene as “horrendous,” highlighting the steep incline of Cutcombe Hill where the coach went down the slope without protective barriers, adding to the severity of the crash.
