Cheddar Reservoir in Somerset will be closed to the public from midnight on Wednesday, July 8, until 9am on Monday, July 13, due to extreme heat conditions. Bristol Water has confirmed the closure aligns with their routine water safety protocols during periods of severe heat.
The closure follows the UK Health Security Agency’s announcement of an amber heat-health warning, effective from 9am Wednesday through 9pm Sunday, July 12. To prevent heat-related accidents and reduce strain on emergency services, Bristol Water has restricted access to the reservoir during this critical period.
Visitors will find that the two small car parks at Cheddar Sharpham Road and the Axbridge entrance will be closed for reservoir access. However, the Sharpham Road car park will remain open for those visiting the nearby cemetery.

A Bristol Water spokesperson emphasized the risks, stating: “With extreme heat and limited shade along the reservoir’s permissive path, we want everyone to stay safe. The water may look inviting in high temperatures, but it is extremely dangerous. This closure helps prevent incidents that could put additional pressure on emergency services during an already busy time.”
Bristol Water apologizes for any inconvenience caused but highlights that public safety is the priority during this heatwave.
