Chard Carnival 2025: Essential Guide to Timings, Road Closures, and Parking

The South Somerset carnival season is in full swing, and the much-anticipated Chard Carnival is just around the corner. This traditional event, part of the South Somerset Federation alongside Wellington, Ilminster, and Taunton, promises a dazzling display of illuminated floats, lively performers, and a festive atmosphere for all ages.

Chard Carnival is a highlight of the local calendar, featuring brilliantly lit carts parading through the town center amid music, dancers, and captivating acts. Each float represents community groups or themes inspired by children’s books, films, historical events, and local landmarks, offering a blend of creativity and celebration.

Families and spectators gather along the streets to enjoy the spectacle, with many pubs open, a funfair, and food stalls adding to the vibrant carnival environment. Beyond entertainment, the event plays a vital role in the community by raising thousands of pounds each year for local charities and organizations.

Mark your calendar: Chard Carnival 2025 takes place on Saturday, October 11, and is divided into two parts. The Children’s Carnival kicks off at 12:00 PM, followed by the main evening procession at 7:30 PM. Admission is free, though attendees are encouraged to support local causes through charitable donations collected during the event.

The carnival procession begins at Numatics on Tapstone Road, moving from Millfield to Church Street, then onto Holyrood Street, Duck Lane, the High Street, and Fore Street before returning to Tapstone Road. The entire route will be clearly signposted for ease of navigation.

Parking is available at multiple locations across Chard, and it’s recommended to arrive early due to temporary road closures. The A30 and several adjoining streets will be closed between 6:00 PM and the end of the carnival. Millfield will close earlier at 2:00 PM, with a no-parking order starting from midday. During the Children’s Carnival, a rolling roadblock will follow the procession to manage traffic safely.

Chard’s carnival is part of a broader series of illuminated carnivals across the South West this autumn, including notable events in Wellington, Taunton, Honiton, and Bridgwater, each offering their own unique local flavor and excitement.
