‘Chaos’ M5 crash involved bus with 35 passengers on board

A collision between a bus and a car caused significant disruption on the M5 southbound carriageway between junctions 26 and 27 on Thursday evening. The crash led to heavy traffic delays, with some drivers even stepping out of their vehicles amid the chaos.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, deploying three fire engines from Wellington and Taunton. Upon arrival, crews found a bus carrying approximately 35 passengers and a car involved in the crash. All bus passengers were checked and confirmed to have sustained no injuries.

Firefighters helped release one person trapped inside the car. After their intervention, the scene was handed over to the Police, Ambulance, and Highway authorities for further management.

As of 10 PM, two lanes of the motorway remained blocked. Witnesses reported a standstill in traffic near the Wellington junction within the roadworks zone, with numerous emergency vehicles flashing their blue lights. Some drivers even exited their vehicles to move traffic cones, attempting to assist emergency teams in accessing the area.

The incident has been described by those present as “pretty chaotic,” reflecting the seriousness of the crash and its impact on traffic flow.
