One businesswoman recounted a distressing incident where a gang of young individuals harassed a boy with autism, culminating in a confrontation when she intervened, and they targeted her store. Such incidents have become alarmingly frequent, with groups engaging in reckless activities such as cycling and littering, much to the dismay of residents.
Local shop owners and residents have expressed frustration over the disruptive behavior, highlighting concerns about the lack of intervention and the potential motives driving these groups to congregate in the area.
The fear of bullying and intimidation has left many feeling apprehensive about confronting these youth groups, who have been linked to a surge in shoplifting and organized theft.
Sergeant Tom Ottley, Okehampton’s neighborhood sergeant, addressed the gravity of the situation, outlining measures taken by the authorities to address anti-social behavior. While acknowledging the challenges, he emphasized the community spirit and the positive collaboration between the police and local businesses.
Despite these concerns, some residents have reported minimal encounters with anti-social behavior, while others have commended the efforts of the police in promptly addressing issues.
