A significant milestone has been reached in Bridgwater’s £20 million regeneration programme with the appointment of Sam Smith as chairman of the newly formed Pride in Place board. Bridgwater is the sole town within Somerset Council’s jurisdiction to receive this funding as part of phase two of the government’s Pride in Place scheme, aimed at rejuvenating 169 UK neighbourhoods by fostering strong, resilient, and integrated communities.
The Bridgwater South area—which encompasses much of the Hamp neighbourhood—is set to benefit from the investment over the next decade. This funding will be managed by a board composed primarily of local residents, ensuring community voices remain central to regeneration efforts.
Sam Smith, a lifelong Hamp estate resident with deep community roots, has been confirmed as chairman following a local drop-in event held in mid-April. Known for revitalising the Rhode Lane Wanderers Junior Football Club in 2024, an organisation that provides crucial opportunities for young people to engage positively, Smith brings firsthand insight into the area’s challenges and strengths.

“I’m incredibly proud and honoured to chair the Pride in Place Bridgwater board,” Smith said. “Bridgwater South holds a special place in my heart—it’s where I grew up and where my family has contributed for generations. Through volunteering and grassroots sport, I’ve witnessed both the hurdles and immense community spirit here.”
Bridgwater South was selected for funding due to its high ranking on the national index of deprivation regarding local amenities and quality of life. The targeted communities lie around the Meads eco-park, including streets near Haygrove School, Old Taunton Road, Rhode Lane, and areas adjacent to the River Parrett.
The Pride in Place funding focuses on three core objectives:
- Building stronger, safer communities where residents feel proud and connected.
- Creating vibrant, thriving neighbourhoods with bustling high streets and quality infrastructure.
- Empowering residents to influence the future of their community and reclaim control over local development.
Smith emphasised the unique opportunity this initiative represents. “Pride in Place is a once-in-a-generation chance to create lasting change. I look forward to collaborating with residents, community groups, partners, and local organisations to deliver meaningful improvements that truly reflect the community’s needs.”
The new board is expected to be fully established by the summer and will work closely with Somerset Council, Bridgwater Town Council, and local MP Sir Ashley Fox. Mr Fox expressed his enthusiasm: “Securing £20 million for Bridgwater South is a momentous achievement. I am committed to ensuring this funding prioritises local voices and delivers real benefits where they’re needed most.”
