A significant milestone has been reached in Bridgwater’s £20 million regeneration initiative with the appointment of Sam Smith as chairman of the newly formed Pride in Place board. This board will oversee the investment aimed at revitalising the Bridgwater South community over the next decade.
Bridgwater stands out as the only town in the Somerset Council area to secure funding through phase two of the UK government’s Pride in Place programme. The scheme targets 169 neighbourhoods nationwide, focusing on building strong, resilient, and integrated communities.
The Bridgwater South area, which includes much of the Hamp neighbourhood, will benefit from this £20 million investment, distributed and managed by a board comprised of local residents. Following a community engagement event in mid-April, Sam Smith, a long-time resident of the Hamp estate with deep family ties in the area, was appointed chairman. The remaining board members are expected to be selected by the end of summer.

Mr Smith has been a community pillar, notably reviving Rhode Lane Wanderers Junior FC in 2024—a club he played for as a child. This club provides young people with a positive outlet, contributing to community cohesion and youth development.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Mr Smith said, “I’m incredibly proud and honoured to be appointed chairman of Pride in Place Bridgwater. Bridgwater South means a great deal to me, both personally and through my family’s long-standing involvement. Through volunteering and sport, I have witnessed the challenges we face and the strong spirit that fuels our community.”
Bridgwater South was chosen for government funding due to its high rankings on the national deprivation index, reflecting challenges in amenities and quality of life. The area covers neighborhoods around Meads eco-park, including parts of Durleigh Road, West Street, Old Taunton Road, Rhode Lane, and several adjacent streets.
The £20 million fund focuses on three main goals:
- Building stronger, more resilient communities where people feel safe and proud
- Creating thriving places with vibrant high streets, diverse amenities, and quality infrastructure
- Empowering residents to shape the future of their community and take control of local decision-making
Mr Smith highlighted, “Pride in Place provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a lasting, positive impact. I’m eager to collaborate with residents, community groups, and partners to bring meaningful change. Above all, I want local people to feel valued and proud of their neighbourhood.”
The board’s formation is scheduled for completion by summer, after which project delivery will begin alongside Somerset Council, Bridgwater Town Council, and local MP Sir Ashley Fox. Mr Fox welcomed the funding, emphasizing the importance of local leadership in ensuring projects meet community priorities.
He stated, “Securing £20 million for Bridgwater South is a wonderful achievement. I am committed to working closely with residents to ensure this investment transforms our community for the better, in ways that truly resonate with those who live here.”
