Centuries-Old Somerset Pub Set for Major Refurbishment to Secure Future

The Woolpack Inn, a historic Grade II listed pub situated in the heart of Beckington, Somerset, is set for extensive refurbishment subject to planning approval. Located on Warminster Road near Frome, the pub traces its origins back to the 16th century, with much of the current structure dating from the late 18th century.

Greene King has submitted detailed plans aiming to revitalise the pub through significant internal reconfiguration and enhancements. The proposals include improved guest accommodation and boosted food service offerings, intended to secure the pub’s long-term role at the centre of the local community.

The Woolpack Inn enjoys a prominent position at the junction of Warminster Road, Frome Road, Church Hill, and Bath Road, close to local landmarks such as the primary school and St. George’s Church.

Key elements of the refurbishment include comprehensive updates to the bar and dining spaces, renovation of guest bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, and the addition of a new accessible toilet on the ground floor. The current manager’s accommodation will be reconfigured to enhance functionality, and a flat roof over dining areas is set to be replaced with a pitched roof featuring skylights, enhancing both the building’s external appearance and the dining experience.

The pub’s courtyard will also undergo extensive repairs, including improvements to the accessible entrance and ramp, installation of new handrails and lighting, as well as a timber lean-to pergola. Externally, the building will be repainted to refresh and enhance its appearance, potentially including a subtle update to the colour scheme.

A spokesperson for Design Management Partnership, representing the applicant, stated: “The proposed works are carefully developed to revitalise the pub as a modern, community-focused, food-led venue, while respecting and preserving its historic character. The modest scale of changes is designed to minimise impact on the heritage asset and to conserve, or where appropriate, enhance its architectural and historical significance. The refresh of the external colour palette will enhance the building’s appearance without compromising its architectural integrity.”

The refurbishment aims to establish the Woolpack Inn as a high-quality hospitality venue that contributes positively to Beckington’s character and vitality, ensuring its long-term sustainable use.

Somerset Council is expected to reach a decision on the plans within the next three to four months, with work potentially commencing in early 2027. Greene King has not yet confirmed whether the refurbishments will necessitate any partial or full temporary closure of the pub during construction.
