Jim Freer, a distinguished Second World War RAF veteran, is on the verge of turning 100, and in a heartwarming initiative, the public is called upon to commemorate this special occasion with birthday cards.
The Royal Air Forces Association has initiated a campaign encouraging people to send birthday cards to Jim Freer as he prepares to celebrate his 100th birthday on April 16. Joining the RAF at 19 in 1944, Jim served as a flight engineer and was later stationed at the RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, flying Halifax Mk III bombers for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 429 Squadron.
Having participated in over 30 operational missions over Europe, including those supporting the D-Day landings, Jim’s contributions were vital during the war. His endeavors have been recognized with several Second World War medals, including the esteemed Légion d’honneur and the Bomber Command Clasp.

In the post-war years, Jim pursued a career in engineering, working in various capacities before eventually retiring as a production director. Presently residing at Newstone House Care Home in Sturminster Newton, Dorset, Jim will be celebrating his milestone alongside his wife Valerie, care home staff, and friends.
The Chair of the RAF Association’s Sturminster/Gill branch, Tony Dee, expressed immense pride in having a veteran of Jim’s caliber in their midst and paid tribute to his exceptional valor as a young man enduring 33 operational missions over Europe.
