Celebrity Baker Richard Bertinet Faces Closure Threat After 46.6% Rent Hike

Celebrity baker Richard Bertinet, known for his appearances on shows like Saturday Kitchen and James Martin’s Saturday Morning, is facing a tough challenge as his Bath-based cookery school, the Bertinet Kitchen, contends with a staggering 46.6% rent increase. Operating since 2005, the school may be forced to close within two years if conditions don’t improve.

Bertinet learned of the rent hike from Bath and North East Somerset Council in February. Speaking to Somerset Live, he expressed concern, saying, “If this carries on, if we close in two years' time we won’t come back.”

Taking to social media, Bertinet shared his frustration with his followers: “I love my Bath city… but just got my rent review from Bath and North East Somerset Council. Yes, I understand rent reviews and increases, but 46.6% is excessive! There’s only so much I can raise prices — and I won’t! The school attracts students from around the world who stay and spend in Bath. I want Bath to be great for people and small businesses, but this isn’t the way forward.”

He received widespread support from fans and fellow business owners, some of whom even offered alternative premises outside Bath. Despite these offers, Bertinet remains committed to staying in the city: “We are part of the fabric of Bath.”

The Bertinet Kitchen not only provides popular cookery courses for international students but also contributes significantly to local tourism. Bertinet also pointed out that the premises required major renovation when he first took over in 2005, underscoring his long-term investment in the site.

While expressing respect for the council and their past cooperation, Bertinet hopes future rent reviews will consider businesses on a more individual basis. “I’ve been here for twenty years and always had a good relationship with the council. Our experience has been very positive. I want to keep working with the council to make Bath better,” he stated.

Bath and North East Somerset Council has been contacted for comment.
