Celebrating Joan Hawken: Glastonbury War Volunteer Veteran Turns 101

Joan Hawken, a beloved resident of St. Benedict’s Nursing Home in Glastonbury, recently marked her 101st birthday surrounded by family, friends, and devoted staff. Born Edna Joan Bailey in 1924 in Dinder near Wells, Joan’s early years were defined by dedication and service. Between 1941 and 1944, she contributed to the war effort by working at the Admiralty and volunteering with the Red Cross, commuting daily by train to Bath.

In 1949, Joan married David Sheppard, and together they raised three daughters in Chilcompton. After being widowed in 1978, she returned to Wells and married her second husband, Don Hawken, in 1983. Don passed away in 2013.

Today, Joan lives at St. Benedict’s Nursing Home, proud mother to three daughters, grandmother of seven, and great-grandmother of fourteen. Her 101st birthday celebration was complete with her favorite lemon drizzle cake, festive decorations, and heartfelt moments shared with loved ones.

Reaching 101 is a wonderful achievement.”
