Hatchers, one of the oldest family-owned department stores in the UK, is commemorating its 250th anniversary. Established in April 1775 as a drapery business, the store has become a thriving presence on Taunton’s High Street, currently employing over 40 individuals. The store’s roots in the town can be traced back to 1792.
To honor the occasion, the present directors plan to host a celebratory party for both current and former staff. The event will be graced by the presence of the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq.
Owned by the Somerset-based Hill and Raisey families since 1986, Hatchers holds a deep family history, with connections dating back to the 1960s and early 1970s when members of both families served as directors of the store.
The decision to take full ownership in 1986 was a pivotal moment, as it ensured the preservation of the store as a family business amid interest from external investors. Today, the sons of Mike Hill and Clive Raisey, Stephen and Mark, continue the legacy as directors of the business, emphasizing the familial bond that underpins Hatchers.
As the store looks back on its rich history, the current directors express confidence in its bright future, buoyed by the unwavering support of the community and a loyal customer base.
Hatchers' enduring presence has witnessed significant historical events, from the American Revolutionary War to the reign of George III, exemplifying its remarkable journey through time.
