St Joseph and St Teresa Catholic Primary School in Wells received an outstanding report from Ofsted, with commendations for its ‘safe and welcoming’ environment, high academic achievement, and strong community values. The inspection conducted on December 3 and 4, 2024, rated the school ‘Good’ in key areas such as education quality, behavior, personal development, leadership, and early years provision.
The school was commended for fostering a strong sense of community and respect among students, creating a safe and supportive environment where bullying is uncommon. The report also highlighted the school’s high expectations for pupils, linking careers to the curriculum to inspire and raise aspirations.
In addition, pupils at St Joseph and St Teresa Catholic Primary School take on leadership roles and actively engage with the local community, contributing to charity initiatives and community events. The curriculum was celebrated for its ambition and structure, offering opportunities for pupils to revisit and connect new learning to prior knowledge.

Ofsted praised the school’s efforts in promoting literacy, highlighting reading as a strength and emphasizing the expertise of teachers in building reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. The report also commended the school for effective behavior management, where praise and rewards are consistently used to encourage positive behavior.
The provision for personal development, social and health education (PSHE), and the school’s commitment to supporting wider development were identified as strong aspects. However, areas for improvement were identified, particularly in ensuring that all pupils are appropriately challenged and in the pace of implementing improvements.
The governance and leadership were recognized for their commitment to the school’s success, with effective support for staff and robust systems for checking on the quality of provision. Headteacher, Teresa Harvey, expressed her appreciation for the school’s teaching and support staff, the ongoing support from parents, and the privilege of working with such remarkable pupils.
