Excitement is buzzing in Somerset as the county gears up for its most anticipated annual event, Somerset Day 2025. Scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11, this two-day extravaganza promises a delightful mix of celebrations to honor the region’s heritage and produce.
The jubilations kick off a week earlier with a special Choral Evensong at Taunton Minster on Sunday, May 4. This traditional service is a beautiful prelude that unites the community in song and reflection, setting a harmonious tone for the upcoming festivities.
At the heart of the weekend is the Big Somerset Picnic, an invitation for friends, families, and neighbors to come together in merriment, enjoying local produce either at home or in communal spaces. This picnic is not just an ode to Somerset’s culinary delights, including its renowned cider and cheese, but also serves as an opportunity to raise funds for local charities and good causes.

A new highlight of this year’s festivities is a grand event at Rich’s Cider Farm, featuring two days of homegrown music, delectable food, and entertainment suitable for the whole family. Starting Saturday evening, May 10, with a performance by Somerset legends, The Wurzels, the revelry will continue into Sunday with activities designed to spotlight the county’s exceptional talent and hospitality.
Residents and businesses are urged to display their Somerset pride by adorning their homes and premises with the Somerset flag and colorful bunting. Organizers are rallying locals to unite in support of the celebration by turning the county red and yellow.
Nigel Muers-Raby, founder and chief executive of Passion for Somerset, the not-for-profit community interest company behind Somerset Day, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This year’s Somerset Day promises to be more exciting than ever, with a fantastic line-up of events that truly showcase the spirit of our county. Whether you’re enjoying a picnic, soaking in the atmosphere at Rich’s Cider Farm, or proudly flying the Somerset flag, we encourage everyone to get involved and celebrate all that makes Somerset special.”
Somerset Day, observed annually on May 11, honors the historic rallying of Somerset by Alfred the Great to combat the invading Viking army. The event has grown significantly since its inception in 2015, when over 8,000 people participated in an online poll to select the date.
