Castle Cary Aims for Gold in RHS Britain in Bloom Competition

Castle Cary is digging deep in its efforts to secure three gold medals in the prestigious RHS Britain in Bloom competition. After achieving one gold and two silver gilt medals in 2023, the community is aiming for even greater success in 2025. Organizers are coordinating with local groups, schools, and businesses in a concentrated push to impress judges in the South West regional round.

The competition, organized by the Royal Horticultural Society, evaluates various aspects beyond vibrant floral displays, including environmental sustainability, community engagement, and long-term improvements. Preparations for the 2025 competition began in July 2024 and will culminate in judging in July 2025.

Penny Steiner, the chair of the Cary in Bloom working group, is leading the town’s endeavor to secure triple gold. The group has expanded to include participants such as Castle Cary Primary School, the Garden Association, Eat Cary, the Moat Garden, local U3A groups, the Allotment Association, The Newt, and Higher Farm. Residents and businesses will adorn their premises with hanging baskets, window boxes, and tubs, injecting color throughout the town.

The initiative reflects sustainability at its core, with the development of green projects, including a living wall on a town bus shelter. Furthermore, a scarecrow festival and a series of educational talks and walks will engage the community. An exhibition showcasing the Cary in Bloom initiative will also take place, featuring contributions from local art and photography groups.

Penny emphasizes that the initiative is about more than just medals, stating, “We are overall bringing the community together through creativity, gardening, and fun.” For more information, visit the Market House Castle Cary or contact Penny Steiner at [email protected].
