Nestled deep in the Somerset woods, a unique Airbnb offers guests an unforgettable “real-life Castaway” experience inside a plane that appears to have crash-landed in isolation. This one-of-a-kind accommodation features two sections of a retired Lufthansa Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, bought separately on eBay, transported over 200 miles, and pieced together to create a marooned setting unlike any other.
The aircraft, once a passenger plane, was painstakingly converted with original Lufthansa seats and divided into distinct zones: a luxurious first-class “master suite” with a cozy double bed and atmospheric lighting, and the economy-class section fitted with kitchen facilities, a log burner, a TV, and room for two camp beds. Outside, guests can unwind in a wood-fired hot tub, surrounded by tranquil woodland and just a short stroll from the West Somerset Railway and the scenic Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Martyn Baker, the innovative owner, was inspired to create this quirky retreat after a storm damaged his previous lodging. Seeking something different, he purchased the plane parts for a total of £17,000. With a two-day setup in March of the previous year, the plane now offers cozy, isolated comfort with a twist. Despite its “crashed” appearance, guests rave about their stays, awarding it a perfect 5-star rating and praising its originality, comfort, and the immersive atmosphere it provides.

Martyn affectionately notes, “It may look like a crash site, but there are definitely no snakes on this plane!” Visitors appreciate the combination of novelty and hospitality, describing their experience as both fun and relaxing—a perfect escape from everyday life.
Priced at £125 per night plus Airbnb fees, this unique glamping pod continues to capture the imagination of travelers looking for something truly different in the English countryside.
