Care Home Owner Faces Serious Allegations of Threatening Staff and Violating Resident Privacy

Elliscombe House, a care home located in Wincanton, is under scrutiny following a report that accuses its owner of intimidating staff, entering residents’ rooms without permission, and evicting residents with little notice. These allegations have sparked serious concerns about the management and safety culture within the facility.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), which evaluates care homes across six key categories—overall, safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led—recently inspected Elliscombe House. While the home received a ‘Good’ rating overall and in most categories, it was rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ in the critical area of being well-led. This category assesses leadership, governance, and management practices that ensure high-quality, person-centered care and a culture of openness and fairness.

During an inspection in March, after multiple complaints were raised, the CQC found troubling evidence about the owner’s conduct. Elliscombe House, which accommodates up to 35 elderly residents including those with dementia, had 28 residents at the time of the inspection. Staff reported feeling demoralized and fearful, with one stating: “As a management team, we are completely deflated, unable to work and run the home the way we want to and now working in constant fear due to the owner’s behaviour.”

Families also voiced concerns, describing the owner’s interactions as upsetting and insensitive. One relative said he made “careless remarks” and lacks the clinical knowledge necessary to understand residents’ needs. Numerous reports documented incidents where the owner entered residents' rooms unannounced, including once during an intimate nursing care procedure, behavior described by staff as “disgusting” and humiliating for residents and their families.

Staff revealed that the owner’s behavior created a tense and anxious atmosphere. Some felt threatened, reporting that he warned them against communicating with CQC inspectors, threatening their employment if they did. This raised serious questions about staff safety and the openness of the care home’s culture.

This is not the first time Elliscombe House’s owner has come under fire. A previous inspection in 2025 led to an agreement that he would limit his visits to the home and only interact with the management team. However, the recent findings show that this agreement was disregarded.

Despite the serious failings in leadership, inspectors praised the staff, calling them “marvellous,” “compassionate,” and “dedicated.” The home maintains good ratings in safety, effectiveness, care quality, and responsiveness, confirming that the core care provided remains strong, though leadership struggles are undermining these efforts.

In response to the report, Elliscombe House released a statement highlighting swift action taken since the inspection. A change in senior management has been implemented, including the appointment of Tina Welford—a former CQC inspector with significant experience in care home governance—as the new Nominated Individual responsible for management oversight, alongside a new managing director.

The statement emphasized that “the safety and wellbeing of residents has always been the top priority” and reaffirmed the home’s overall ‘Good’ rating by the CQC. They also noted a strong reputation with a 9.9/10 rating on carehome.co.uk, supported by positive feedback from residents and families.

The ongoing improvements in leadership aim to restore confidence among staff, residents, and families while ensuring Elliscombe House can provide a respectful, safe, and well-led environment.
