A vehicle fire caused significant damage to a car on the A303 between Stoke-sub-Hamdon and South Petherton near Yeovil yesterday evening, according to the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. The incident occurred at approximately 5:50 pm on October 13.
Emergency crews arrived promptly to find a Peugeot 508 engulfed in flames. Despite their efforts, the fire damaged about 70% of the vehicle. Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control.
A spokesperson for the fire service stated, “We responded swiftly to a call about a car fire on the westbound A303 at 5:50 pm. Two fire engines attended the scene, and the Peugeot 508 was well alight. Our crews worked efficiently to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, the incident appears to have been accidental.”

The fire led to the closure of both westbound lanes while emergency services managed the scene. One fire engine left at 6:30 pm and the other at 6:40 pm. The road remained blocked until it reopened to traffic at 8:45 pm. No injuries were reported. Avon and Somerset Police also attended the scene, but no further comment has been provided.
