Car Park in Taunton Closed Today Due to Safety Concerns Over Driver Behaviour

The Canon Street Car Park in Taunton will be fully closed today following reports of alarming driver behaviour amid ongoing maintenance and resurfacing work. Although the project began on Monday, August 18, with intentions to keep the car park open under strict restrictions and reduced capacity, recent developments have forced a complete shutdown.

Somerset Council, overseeing the works, initially planned for the car park to remain open with limited access to ensure safety around the heavy machinery and delivery vehicles on site. However, due to an unexpected increase in traffic volumes combined with concerning actions by some drivers, the council has made the decision to close the car park entirely today.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council explained, “While the maintenance and resurfacing works have been progressing well, the high traffic and troubling driver behaviour have created unsafe conditions. Given the presence of heavy machinery and delivery trucks, the car park must be closed to protect both workers and the public.”

This temporary closure aims to maintain safety standards until the completion of the work and is essential to prevent potential accidents or disruptions during this period.
