As the days grow shorter and colder, candles become a cozy and cost-effective way to warm up your home while adding a soothing ambiance. But if you’ve ever noticed your candles developing uneven wax pools or unsightly dips, you’re not alone—and there’s a simple fix.
Candle enthusiast Celia recently shared her top tip on TikTok for making candles last longer and look pristine. Her advice centers on the crucial first burn, which sets the tone for how evenly your candle will melt in the future.
“The only candle care guide you need," she states, “because I’m David Beckham level sick of ugly candles.”

Celia emphasizes that during the initial lighting, you should let the candle burn continuously for at least 2 to 3 hours. The goal is to allow the wax to melt evenly across the entire surface of the candle, right to the edges.
Avoid extinguishing the candle once you see just a small melted patch in the center. Doing so causes the wax to harden unevenly, creating holes and leaving large amounts of wax stuck along the sides. This “memory” effect means that future burns will follow the same uneven pattern, wasting wax and shortening your candle’s lifespan.
If your candle has already developed these irregularities, don’t worry—there’s a quick remedy. Wrap some tinfoil around the rim of the candle before lighting it again. The foil traps heat, encouraging the wax near the edges to melt and even out the surface. Leave it to burn for a few hours to restore a smooth top layer.
Finally, always remember to trim your candle wicks after each use, ideally with a wick trimmer or nail scissors. Keeping the wick short prevents excessive flames, soot buildup, and reduces fire risk.
By following these simple steps, you’ll enjoy longer-lasting candles with a beautifully even burn every time.
