British Skeleton’s Matt Weston recently made history by winning World Championship gold in Lake Placid, regaining the title he previously secured in St Moritz. This victory not only marked his second World Championship win but also positioned him as Great Britain’s most decorated athlete at World Championship level. Just a month prior, Weston had retained his Overall World Cup crown after an exceptional eight-race season across Europe and Asia.
Despite these remarkable achievements, Weston remains focused on the future, setting his sights on the one major title he has yet to claim – Olympic gold at the upcoming Winter Games in Milan Cortina. Refusing to indulge in excessive celebrations, Weston is driven by the determination to ensure that his ultimate celebration will take place after next year’s Olympics.
Reflecting on his approach, Weston stated, “There were no celebrations after winning the Overall World Cup and that’s been similar after the Worlds. I’ve not really taken my foot off the gas or really celebrated and I don’t really plan to. There’s still one thing I haven’t achieved and I’m focusing 100 per cent on Milan Cortina next year.”

Having consistently performed at a high level, Weston is leveraging his experiences from previous championships to strengthen his preparation for the upcoming Olympics. His exceptional margin of victory in the recent World Championships, combined with his ability to thrive under pressure, instills confidence in his potential for success in Cortina.
Drawing from his past triumphs, Weston emphasized the value of experience in maintaining his focus and composure throughout the competition. “Having won it before definitely helped me. I used my experience from the first one throughout the heats, especially when I was going to bed after Day 1 leading overnight. I was in a similar position to St Moritz with a big gap between me and the rest, and that experience made it easier for me.”
As Weston continues to push the boundaries of excellence, his unwavering dedication and competitive spirit underscore his pursuit of achieving the extraordinary.
