Somerset Council has announced the dates for upcoming roadworks aimed at restoring parking spaces along Salmon Parade, a key section of Bridgwater’s Celebration Mile. The area had seen parking removed during the implementation of three sections of the Celebration Mile project, funded by a £9 million central government grant to enhance connectivity between the town’s railway station and historic docks.
The removal of parking, along with the cancellation of planned upgrades to the Cross Rifles roundabout, has caused significant congestion across Bridgwater’s roads, drawing strong criticism from local residents and businesses.
In response to a petition with over 5,800 signatures, the council committed in December 2025 to a thorough review of the project. Subsequently, in March 2026, they pledged to restore parking on Salmon Parade within eight weeks.

The council has now confirmed that the parking spaces will be reinstated over two nights, from 7pm on Monday, May 18, to 6am on Wednesday, May 20. During these overnight closures, the road will be shut to allow for the removal of existing road markings and the application of new lining, with continued access guaranteed for residents and businesses.
Additionally, the council is nearing completion of a review of the current one-way traffic system. Results from this review will soon be shared with councillors, local stakeholders, and the public.
Councillor Mike Rigby, portfolio holder for economic development, planning, and assets, stated: “We have listened carefully to the concerns expressed by local businesses and residents. As a result, we are reinstating these parking spaces ahead of our original deadline. Our approach remains evidence-based, and we will soon present data and impact assessments on potential changes to the one-way system.”
The Celebration Mile project, part of the £22.6 million Bridgwater town deal, aims to improve the visitor experience while promoting cycling and walking. The scheme was designed by Somerset Council under Liberal Democrat leadership, with prior approval from the former Conservative-controlled Sedgemoor District and Somerset County Councils, as well as the neutral Bridgwater town deal board.
A comprehensive review of the Celebration Mile is scheduled to be presented to the council’s executive committee on June 3.
