The newly formed Bridgwater Pride in Place board has held its first meeting, marking the commencement of a decade-long initiative to oversee £20 million worth of regeneration projects across the town. Bridgwater was the sole town within the Somerset Council jurisdiction to benefit from the second phase of the government’s Pride in Place programme, which aims to strengthen 169 UK neighbourhoods by fostering strong, resilient, and integrated communities.
The funding is targeted at community projects within the Bridgwater South area, notably encompassing much of the Hamp neighbourhood. Spread over ten years, the £20 million will be allocated by a board composed of local residents and key stakeholders.
Following a community drop-in event in April, Sam Smith, a lifelong Hamp estate resident, was appointed as chairman of the board. The inaugural meeting focused on establishing a shared vision for the area and setting the groundwork for future activities.

Residents will continue to have opportunities in the coming months to propose projects and recommend improvements within the Bridgwater South catchment area. This locale was selected for the programme due to its high ranking on the national index of deprivation, particularly regarding amenities and overall quality of life.
The Bridgwater South area includes communities on both sides of the Meads eco-park, encompassing several local neighbourhoods.
The Pride in Place funding is guided by three core objectives, ensuring that resources are effectively directed to address local needs.
The board comprises representatives from the local community, partner organisations, and other key stakeholders. Its role is crucial in managing the programme and ensuring that central government funding aligns with the aspirations and priorities of the residents.

Following this initial meeting, board members will engage directly with residents across Bridgwater South, reinforcing the commitment to place local voices at the heart of decision-making processes throughout the decade.
