Bridgwater Library in Somerset has been temporarily closed due to significant ceiling damage caused by issues with the roof. Somerset Council has initiated urgent repair work to address the roof problems and ensure the building’s long-term safety and usability.
To protect both staff and visitors, the library will remain closed until further notice while repairs are underway. A Council spokesperson explained that once additional assessments are completed, a clearer timeline for reopening will be provided.
In the meantime, patrons are encouraged to visit nearby libraries in North Petherton, Taunton, and Burnham-On-Sea. The Library Team is also exploring options to offer temporary services and events within Bridgwater itself.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Housing and Culture, emphasized the library’s importance to the community. “Bridgwater Library is a vital resource offering many services," she said. “Our priority is to reopen the building as soon as possible, while also providing alternative services during the closure.”
All scheduled events and activities have been postponed, but the council is urgently investigating temporary venues for half-term activities and warm space programs. Items currently on loan will be automatically renewed, and access to digital resources like e-books and e-audiobooks remains available through www.librarieswest.gov.uk.
