Bridgwater Library Faces Extensive Roof Repairs

Somerset Council has earmarked over £600,000 for much-needed repairs at Bridgwater Library, which has been plagued by numerous roof leaks. The library, a grade two listed building situated near the River Parrett, has suffered from deteriorating roof conditions, leading staff to use buckets to contain water ingress.

Carrie Russell, the council’s property projects officer, revealed that despite initial plans to overhaul the entire library, the focus will now be on addressing its most dire components. One immediate concern is the urgent repair of the roof to prevent further damage to the building’s infrastructure.

The persistent leaks have prompted the relocation of Bridgwater’s registration service to Bridgwater House due to the inhospitable conditions within the library. Councillor Mike Rigby emphasized the necessity of the £620,000 investment, emphasizing the limited resources for repairs and maintenance.

With the repairs expected to be completed by the end of summer, the council aims to avert any further disruption to the crucial services provided by the library, which remains an essential community resource.
