Bridgwater College Academy Placed Under Special Measures Following Critical Ofsted Report

Bridgwater College Academy has been placed under special measures after a damning Ofsted inspection revealed significant shortcomings across multiple areas. The report, published on Thursday, May 21, identifies chronic issues including low pupil attendance, poor academic achievement, and frequent pupil conflicts.

Ofsted found pupil achievement “well below” national averages in key stages 2 and 4. Inspectors remarked, “Pupils attending this school do not receive an acceptable standard of education.” They noted that teachers’ expectations are insufficient, resulting in work that fails to prepare students adequately for future education or employment.

While early years provision shows some recent improvements, attendance remains a critical problem. Too many pupils are absent frequently and insufficiently supported to catch up upon their return. Truancy during lessons was also flagged as a major concern, though new mentoring systems aimed at improving attendance have recently been introduced.

Bullying was another serious issue highlighted by inspectors. Many pupils do find trusted adults within the school and feel safe; however, bullying and disruptive behaviour occur regularly. “Inappropriate language, derogatory comments, and altercations between pupils are commonplace,” the report states. Furthermore, pupils often hesitate to report incidents due to doubts about whether adults will adequately address their concerns.

On a positive note, the inspection confirms that safeguarding standards meet expectations, and students engage enthusiastically in extracurricular activities such as clubs and school trips.

The school requires urgent improvement in five key areas: achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance. Early years provision and personal development also need attention. Due to these shortcomings, Bridgwater College Academy has been placed under special measures—a status that may lead to more frequent inspections and, in extreme cases, government intervention including potential closure.

Serving 1,576 pupils aged 3 to 19, the academy acknowledged the report’s findings. A spokesperson said, “The academy accepts the findings of the Ofsted report and recognises that urgent improvements are needed across key areas of school life.” Recent leadership changes include new headteachers in the primary and secondary phases and a new CEO, who are driving a focused programme to rapidly improve standards.

The academy’s immediate priorities include establishing consistent behavioural standards, boosting attendance, enhancing teaching quality, improving support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and disadvantaged students, and strengthening governance and accountability.

The spokesperson concluded, “We are not seeking to defend the past. Our responsibility is to act quickly, communicate openly, and ensure that pupils at Bridgwater College Academy receive the education and support they deserve.”
