Bridgwater College Academy Placed Under Special Measures Following Critical Ofsted Report

Bridgwater College Academy has been placed under special measures after an Ofsted inspection revealed serious concerns regarding the school’s performance and environment. The report, published on May 21, highlights multiple issues including low attendance, underachievement, and frequent pupil conflicts.

According to inspectors, pupil achievement at the school is significantly below national averages. The report states, “Pupils attending this school do not receive an acceptable standard of education. Pupils’ results in national tests and examinations at the end of key stages 2 and 4 fall well below national averages across assessed subjects.”

Inspectors also criticized the quality of teaching, noting that “teachers do not have high enough expectations for what pupils should know or be able to do,” which results in work that is insufficient to prepare students for future education or employment. However, the report did praise recent curriculum improvements in the Reception and Nursery classes.

Attendance problems are a persistent concern. The report points out, “Too many pupils do not attend school frequently enough, missing a significant amount of learning and lacking adequate support to catch up upon return.” Truancy during lessons was also identified as an ongoing issue, although new attendance mentoring systems have recently been introduced.

Bullying remains a significant problem at the academy. While many pupils feel safe due to trusting relationships with adults at the school, the report notes that “pupils have shared significant concerns about the behaviour of other pupils,” with bullying frequently disrupting learning. Furthermore, students are often hesitant to report incidents, fearing a lack of effective response. The report adds that “inappropriate language, derogatory comments, and altercations between pupils are commonplace.”

On a positive note, the school meets safeguarding standards, and pupils benefit from a variety of extracurricular activities, clubs, and trips.

Ofsted concluded that the academy requires attention in early years provision and personal development and wellbeing but urgently needs improvement across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance.

The inspection report declares: “His Majesty’s Chief Inspector is of the opinion that this school requires special measures because it is failing to provide an acceptable standard of education, and those responsible for leadership and governance do not demonstrate the capacity to secure necessary improvements.”

Special measures imply increased scrutiny and inspections, and could ultimately lead to government intervention including potential closure if improvements are not made.

Bridgwater College Academy serves 1,576 students aged 3 to 19 of all genders. In response to the report, a school spokesperson acknowledged the findings and outlined steps underway to address the issues. They emphasized recent leadership changes, including new headteachers for both primary and secondary phases and a new CEO, who are “driving a clear and determined programme of change.”

Immediate priorities include establishing consistent behaviour standards, boosting attendance, enhancing teaching quality, improving support for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and disadvantaged pupils, and strengthening governance and accountability.

The spokesperson concluded, “This is a serious report. We do not defend the past. Our responsibility is to act quickly, communicate openly, and ensure that pupils at Bridgwater College Academy receive the education and support they deserve.”
