Bridgwater Carnival Clubs Receive Major Upgrade with New HQ Rebuild

Bridgwater Carnival Clubs are set to benefit from a significant £4.9 million refurbishment project, with the appointment of a contractor to lead the redevelopment of their Bristol Road workshops. This facility, used by nine clubs to design and build their intricate carnival carts, will be transformed into a modern hub featuring 14 upgraded sheds equipped with heating, lighting, and running water.

The project has received the green light from Somerset Council, paving the way for construction to begin in the coming months. This upgrade forms part of a broader revitalization effort funded through the Bridgwater Town Deal, which includes a £3 million government investment supported by contributions from the Somerset Community Foundation and Arts Council England.

The council emphasizes that the refurbishment aims to “regenerate the Bristol Road site from its currently dilapidated condition.” By appointing a main contractor to oversee the rebuild on behalf of the Bridgwater Carnival Committee, Somerset Council ensures adherence to public sector procurement regulations and fulfills the Town Deal’s objectives.

The rejuvenated site promises improved working conditions that will help sustain volunteer commitment for annual carnival activities. Currently, about 1,700 volunteers contribute to the construction of carnival carts every year, with the hub also serving as the base for the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee.

Beyond the workshop enhancements, the plans include the development of 140 car parking spaces—six of which will be designated for disabled users—and 13 cycle stands. Additionally, improvements to the Bristol Road junction will enhance pedestrian access and upgrade the surrounding pavements.

Bridgwater Carnival 2024 attracted approximately 1,000 performers and showcased 99 entries, combining both carts and walking participants, highlighting the event’s rich community spirit and creativity. The forthcoming rebuild ensures that this beloved tradition will continue to thrive from a better-equipped, revitalized headquarters.
