Europe’s largest illuminated carnival, the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, is inviting the community to join its dedicated volunteer team in preparation for the 2025 event. Organisers will host a drop-in open day on Sunday, July 13, from 11 am to 3 pm at the Carnival Centre on Bridgwater’s High Street, welcoming anyone interested in playing a part in the town’s iconic celebration on November 1.
Jonathan Walter, the carnival’s collection officer, explained the vital role volunteers play in making the event a success. “We rely on over a thousand volunteers on carnival day to ensure everything runs smoothly and to raise substantial funds for local charities and good causes,” he said.
Volunteer opportunities range from marshals, grandstand stewards, and car park attendants to collectors, programme and souvenir sellers, drivers, and traffic management assistants. The open day offers a chance for individuals, community groups, charities, sports clubs, and businesses to learn how they can contribute and benefit from this beloved event. “Carnival raises tens of thousands of pounds annually for fundraising efforts,” Jonathan added.

Prospective volunteers will have the opportunity to speak with experienced members of the organising committee, gaining insight into the process and the rewards of volunteering for one of Europe’s most spectacular illuminated events.
No appointment is necessary to attend the open day, which will provide refreshments for visitors. Those unable to attend can contact Jonathan via email at [email protected] or by phone at 07808 988182.
With a rich history dating back to 1881, the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival is the oldest event of its kind in the UK and has grown to be one of the world’s top illuminated carnivals—all powered by enthusiastic volunteers.
