In Weston-super-Mare, a courageous street warden named Simon Vowles apprehended a teenager suspected of carrying a stolen knife. The incident occurred around 12:50 pm on Wednesday, February 11, following reports that a knife had been taken from a store on Regent Street.
Simon’s swift response to the situation prevented further harm. A local business owner praised him on Facebook for going “above and beyond” in his duties. During the confrontation, the suspect slashed at Simon, causing damage to his clothing but, fortunately, Simon was unharmed.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the suspect, a boy in his mid-teens, was arrested on suspicion of theft, battery, and threatening behavior with a blade in a public space. He has since been released on conditional bail while investigations continue.

Councillor James Clayton commended Simon for his “exceptional bravery and swift actions,” noting that his intervention disarmed the youth and prevented what could have been a far more serious incident. The councillor also assisted Simon in restraining the suspect until police arrived.
PCSO Supervisor Jakub Pietroczuk thanked Simon for his bravery and professionalism, emphasizing the importance of tackling knife crime, especially involving young people. He reiterated the commitment of the Neighbourhood Policing Team to steer young individuals away from criminal activities and create safer communities.
