‘Brave and bold’ schoolboy named as teen fatally stabbed in Chippenham

A community mourns the tragic loss of Shayne Hambakachere, a 16-year-old schoolboy described by his family as “ambitious and driven,” who was fatally stabbed on Saturday, January 31 in Chippenham.

Wiltshire Police responded to reports of an incident on London Road shortly before 4 pm, where Shayne was found with stab wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Shayne’s father, Emmanuel Hambakachere, shared a heartfelt tribute to his son, recalling his dedication, kindness, and determination. “Shayne was a smart, tidy young man who worked two jobs at one point to buy what he wanted without asking family for help,” Emmanuel said. “He had big dreams and was never afraid to stand up for what he believed in.”

Outside Hardenhuish School, where Shayne was a student, tributes have been left by classmates and community members. A memorial tree within the school grounds honors his memory, with police kindly requesting that tributes be left there rather than on the street to maintain safety and order.

Emmanuel painted a vivid picture of his son’s character: “He had a wonderful sense of humour, and we will miss the way he laughed so loudly without a care in the world. Shayne loved going to the gym, was a talented sprinter, often representing his school in competitions, and he used his money wisely, even buying himself a big TV and a new phone.”

He continued, “At home, he was responsible and caring, always doing his chores and respecting curfew. Shayne was brave and bold, never afraid to voice his opinions.”

The family treasures their recent memories, especially a joyful Christmas spent together in 2025 filled with games and laughter. “We are comforted knowing he had a wonderful last Christmas,” Emmanuel said.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that a 15-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the incident. Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson expressed condolences to Shayne’s family and reaffirmed the commitment to combating knife crime in the community.

The family also expressed deep gratitude to the medical staff at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, for their efforts to save Shayne and their compassionate support.
