Boy Who Died in School Coach Crash Near Minehead Named by Police

Oliver Price, a 10-year-old pupil of Minehead Middle School, has been identified by police as the boy who died in the school coach crash near Minehead. The tragic accident occurred shortly before 3 pm on Thursday, July 17, when the coach, carrying pupils and teachers from a trip to Exmoor Zoo, left the A396.

Avon and Somerset Police expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with Oliver’s parents and family, who are being supported by a specially trained officer.” Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Besides Oliver’s death, two children and one adult remain hospitalized in Bristol, while two adults are receiving treatment in Somerset. Several other children have been discharged over the weekend following initial medical care.

The Serious Collision Investigation Team has launched a thorough inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal incident. The coach was recovered on Saturday and is undergoing detailed examination by experts as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have also collected statements from passengers on the coach and witnesses who were nearby at the time of the accident to assist with establishing the cause. Although the scene examination is complete, the A396 remains closed pending a safety inspection by Somerset Council.

Neighbourhood officers will be stationed outside Minehead Middle School to provide reassurance and support to the community. Anyone with concerns or information about the incident is encouraged to approach officers or contact police.

Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington conveyed his sympathies, saying, “Our thoughts are first and foremost with Oliver’s family during this unimaginably difficult time. We will keep them updated throughout the investigation, which is ongoing and may take some time.”

He added, “We appreciate the strong support from our local community, which highlights how close-knit this area is. Thanks also go to emergency services, voluntary groups, and hospital staff who have been instrumental in responding and caring for the injured.”
