Boy, 5, Honoured with Memorial Garden at Radstock School After Brain Tumour Death

A touching tribute has been established at St Mary’s School in Radstock to honour Elias, a beloved five-year-old pupil who passed away after battling a brain tumour. Elias, who attended the school from 2022 until 2025, is remembered fondly for his kindness and the joy he brought to everyone around him.

With the support of Elias’s parents, Jake and Abbie, St Mary’s has created a Memory Garden to keep his spirit alive within the school community. The project was made possible through a remarkable fundraising effort that began last year, raising £10,000 with help from locals and various organisations.

Fundraising initiatives included participation in the Radstock & Westfield Big Local’s ‘Dragons’ Den’, generous donations from local charities, and a special penalty shoot-out event featuring Bristol Rovers player Scott Sinclair.

Headteacher Cathie Lampert shared, “Elias was a much-loved member of our school family who brought kindness, laughter and joy during his time with us. The Memory Garden offers a peaceful, welcoming space where children can sit, chat with friends, read, and enjoy the outdoors. It is a reflection of the warmth and unity of our community, standing as a lasting symbol of friendship, peace, and joy.”

The garden officially opened at the conclusion of the last term, and starting this term, Elias’s classmates have been able to use the space to relax, reflect, and play. The garden features comfortable seating, winding pathways, vegetable and herb plots, a musical play area, and quiet nooks perfect for reading or contemplation. At its heart is a memory tree where pupils leave messages in remembrance of Elias.

St Mary’s School is a member of The Partnership Trust, which comprises 17 local schools. CEO Emma Massey expressed, “The Memory Garden celebrating Elias is a meaningful tribute to how special he was and the positive impact he had on pupils, staff and the wider community. It also stands as a testament to the dedication of our school family, supporters, and Elias’s parents in creating a lasting place of remembrance.”
