Body Found Floating in River Avon Near Bath’s Historic Bridge

A police investigation is underway following the discovery of a body in the River Avon this evening, Sunday, March 8. Emergency services were alerted to the scene near Kensington Meadows and the Grade II listed Cleveland Bridge in Bath after witnesses reported seeing a body floating in the river.

Shortly before 7 p.m., two firefighters bravely entered the cold water, swimming to recover the deceased individual. The body was then safely retrieved and handed over to a waiting ambulance.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service personnel were also seen swimming near the weir at Pulteney Bridge as part of the recovery efforts.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson confirmed the discovery and stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the death. The spokesperson said: “Emergency services have recovered an individual’s body from the river near Pulteney Bridge, off Bridge Street, in Bath. The death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious. Enquiries are ongoing.”
