A Bath family who have lived off-grid on a barge for 16 years are seeking planning permission to build a distinctive four-bedroom home beside the Kennet & Avon Canal, near Folly Footbridge. Their proposal, which the applicants describe as “an unusual site and an unusual proposal,” emphasizes sustainability and a strong connection to the waterways.
If approved by the Bath and North East Somerset Council planning committee on Wednesday, the house would be built next to the canal towpath and constructed with materials transported exclusively by boat. The home is designed to be fully self-sufficient, generating all of its electricity through renewable energy sources and using its own independent water supply. The family also plans to maintain a car-free lifestyle, relying solely on cycling and public transport.
Applicant Wendy Zakiewicz explained in the planning application that moving frequently between moorings, due to the lack of available residential moorings nearby, has made daily life and schooling for their three children increasingly challenging. She said, “Living on our land would allow us to stay connected to the boat community, the local neighborhood, and the natural environment. It would also enable us to better manage the land, travel sustainably, and enhance our low-impact lifestyle to become even more self-sufficient.”
The application drew significant public interest, with 76 supporters and 13 objectors registering their views when the proposal was submitted in 2022. However, planning officers have raised concerns that the plans conflict with multiple policies and the council’s development framework. Although officers have recommended refusal, the final decision rests with the planning committee.
The committee will review the application at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22, at Bath Guildhall.
