Boarding Boost as Taunton School’s Major Expansion Rises Above Ground

Taunton School, one of Somerset’s premier independent schools, is making significant progress on a major new boarding house as part of an ambitious expansion initiative. The project has moved beyond the foundational stage, with the structural framework now being erected.

Scheduled for completion in 2027, the new facility will provide over 140 additional beds for boarders, supporting the school’s broader “One School, Many Pathways” vision. Initial groundwork, including foundations and masonry for the substructure, is complete. Current construction efforts focus on assembling the external and internal load-bearing walls.

To facilitate the build, an electric tower crane was installed in the summer and will remain operational through next year. Equipped with an activated weathervane, the crane can rotate safely during windy conditions, reducing stress on the structure.

Julia Humphries, Taunton School’s director of estates, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress: “We are thrilled that our new boarding facility is beginning to take shape above ground. This development is key to our plan to consolidate all boarders on a single site, significantly enhancing their overall experience.”

Headmaster James Johnson is collaborating closely with the estates and consultant teams to select interior designs that align with the school’s style and meet student needs. Additionally, the school plans to offer site visits for students interested in architecture and construction, fostering hands-on learning opportunities.

Taunton School remains committed to keeping local residents informed through regular updates and will continue transparent communication as construction advances.

Beyond the boarding house, the school’s 56-acre campus has recently benefited from new investments, including the debut of an athletic development gym. Refurbished classrooms, a cutting-edge design technology laboratory, and expanded CNED teaching spaces have also been added, enriching the educational environment.
