Blitz Evacuee Alice Moody, 103, Honoured During VE Day Celebrations

As the nation observes the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, Goodson Lodge care home in Trowbridge is proud to honour its extraordinary resident, 103-year-old Alice Moody. Born in Bermondsey, London in July 1921, Alice’s life is a testament to resilience and service.

At just 18, Alice embarked on her teaching career amidst the turmoil of the Second World War. Starting at Stamford Hill Boys School in Hackney, she was soon thrust into the challenges of the Blitz. When the German bombing raids intensified, Alice accompanied her students as they were evacuated to Hardington Mandeville in Somerset.

In this rural refuge, Alice not only continued her teaching but also became a vital link between host families and the evacuated children. She helped ensure their safety and emotional wellbeing and oversaw their gradual return to London after the war. It was during this difficult yet hopeful period that she met her future husband, Leslie. The couple married in 1945 and raised a daughter, Pam.

Alice’s passion for education endured long after the war. She retired from Staverton Church of England Primary School in 1981 but remained committed to teaching, volunteering to help children improve their reading skills and advocating for social causes both locally and nationally.

Her remarkable contributions were formally recognised when the University of Greenwich awarded her an honorary doctorate at the age of 102. Alice has also penned a memoir chronicling her experiences during the war, offering invaluable insights into evacuation and perseverance.

Reflecting on her wartime role, Alice recalled, “It was a difficult situation as an evacuee teacher. Unlike in a normal school where a teacher’s responsibility was limited to school hours, I was a bridge between the home and school for two years. Thankfully, I encountered no cases of ill treatment.”

Alex Damon, the events manager at Goodson Lodge, remarked, “Alice embodies the courage and selflessness of her generation. We are honoured to celebrate her inspiring life during our VE Day events.”

To mark the occasion on Thursday, May 8, Goodson Lodge—run by the not-for-profit Orders of St John Care Trust—has organised a day filled with remembrance and joy. The celebrations will feature live music by a local singer, traditional games such as croquet and carpet bowls, a general knowledge quiz, and delicious cakes and refreshments.

The festivities will also include a luxury picnic hamper prize, complete with Bucks Fizz, recently drawn and set to be presented during the event.

Residents, their families, and members of the local community are all warmly invited to join the commemorations and celebrate the enduring spirit of a remarkable individual.
