Bird Flu Outbreak Confirmed at Somerset Poultry Farm

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been confirmed at a commercial poultry farm near Ashcott in Somerset. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced the detection of this contagious bird flu strain on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

In response, DEFRA has imposed a 3-kilometer protection zone around the affected premises, within which all birds will be humanely culled to prevent further spread of the virus. Additionally, a 10-kilometer surveillance zone has been established to monitor and control potential transmission risks in the surrounding area.

The Chief Veterinary Officer confirmed the outbreak, emphasizing the importance of swift action to contain the disease. These restrictions have been enacted effective from 3:45 PM on November 29, 2025, and will remain in place until further notice or formal amendment.
